ASM Launches Joint COMPASS Seminar for Deck and Engine
ASM Launches Joint COMPASS Seminar for Deck and Engine
Last May 16-18, 2012, 18 senior officers (12 from deck and 6 from engine departments) completed Batch 7 of the COMPASS Seminar.
This is the first time that the engine and bridge simulator equipment were linked to provide a holistic simulation experience for the participants. The previous 6 batches of the COMPASS Seminar (initiated in 2010) were exclusive for bridge officers.
COMPASS stands for “Communication, Conflict Management and Professional Assertiveness”. The course aims to boost a variety of leadership skills such as bridge team management and decision-making through the use of hi-tech simulations of ship voyages. ASM-ISNTC has partnered with Louie Banta of LJMB Consulting in the design and facilitation of the 3-day learning experience.
As a result of combining both departments in the workshop, simulations were more realistic and interactions among officers were more spontaneous. Participants were very engaged in classroom discussions, case studies and peer assessments. Each one enthusiastically shared ideas, asked questions and even challenged opinions of their peers in a constructive way. At the end of each day, resource persons from ISNTC provided expert advice on how the officers could have best performed in each simulation.
COMPASS serves as ASM-ISNTC’s version of the *Maritime Resource Management (MRM) course. Even if it is currently an optional requirement for senior officers in other companies, ASM-ISNTC aims to put through all senior officers in this high-impact workshop.
