Communication, Conflict Management and Professional Assertiveness (CO.M.P.ASS.) Program
Associated Ship Management (ASM) added another achievement to its record of successful maritime seminars as it launches the first Communication, Conflict Management and Professional Assertiveness (COMPASS) Program last April 26-27, 2010 at G-hotel Manila. COMPASS which is formerly known as Sharpening Attitudes in Leadership (SAIL) program was developed to further enhance the ability of the seafarers in dealing with conflicts arising on board and to resolve these challenges assertively and professionally. The program was headed by ASM Managing Director Mr. Alberto Gomez, ISN Training director Capt. Rene Dzicki and ASM Career Development officer Mr. Jeff Rex Calambuhay with participation of Learning Just Got Better Inc., with its representative Mr. Louie Banta, who was also the seminar’s facilitator.

COMPASS focused on analyzing cases that might occur aboard. Discussions and decision making were imparted among the sixteen participants. Case studies were presented to resolve co-contributed by ISNTC Engine Dept. Head C/E Jovito Erive and MDC-ISNTC head Capt. Antonio Palenzuela who also served as judges. The sixteen participants were divided into four groups and ask to present solutions for their assigned cases. The participants presented their conclusions by discussing their points, supporting it with a skit to further demonstrate their position. The judges as well took part in presenting possible solutions and let the group engaged in constructive arguments. With the assistance of Mr. Jun Mortera, ASM asst. Head Ops, the judges illustrated applicable practices to these cases.
Mr. Louie Banta lectured about conflict management, leadership style and assertiveness. He emphasized the distinctiveness of Filipino culture and its role in preventing effective management and decisive decision making.

Additionally, the participants had learned additional skills that they can apply during the course of their career. They presented techniques by expressing themselves when they are right, controlling their emotions and acting professionally when conflicts arise. The group performed dynamics activities prior and in between discussions to boost the level of their participation and teamwork.
Awards were given to respective participants for their active involvement and effort at the end of the seminar
